Jonathan Hsu, MD
Dr. Hsu is board certified in Family medicine and in Hospice and Palliative medicine. He joined UCBC in 2022 and sees patients at the Comprehensive Cancer Center and Covington-Newton County locations.
Dr. Hsu earned a degree in biology with high distinction from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated with his doctorate in medicine from the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Augusta, Georgia, and studied Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. Throughout his entire higher education career, Dr. Hsu received a variety of academic awards including the Rick Shuman MCG Family Medicine Resident of the Year Award, the Keith Ellis MD Scholarship Award, the Wellstar MD Ethics Champion, the Wellstar Palliative Medicine G.E.M. Physician Award, and Wellstar Palliative Medicine Physician of the Year Award.
While studying at the Medical College of Georgia, Dr. Hsu completed a residency program in Family Medicine. In his family residency program, he demonstrated his leadership by being named chief resident. He completed a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Hsu is an assistant professor at the Medical College of Georgia and is the Subspecialty Education Coordinator for Piedmont Athens Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Hsu is also a clinical assistant professor at Augusta University.
Dr. Hsu is a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Hsu, a hospitalist specializing in palliative care at Piedmont Athens Regional, was recognized for cost effectiveness. Palliative care is meant to provide specialized care for a patient dealing with a serious illness. Not only has Dr. Hsu performed this highly individualized care for his patients and the community on a high level, but his advances in practicing palliative care led to a significant reduction in hospital readmissions and more than $12 million in cost savings since joining Piedmont in fiscal year 2017.
Dr. Hsu’s dedication to providing hospice and palliative care began during residency training. During his work with cancer patients, he saw a need to bring comfort and pain relief to patients in their final stages of life. Dr. Hsu understands the privilege and honor that comes with providing care to a vulnerable population. His goal is to decrease patient suffering and improve their quality of life by leading with compassion and offering high-quality care.
When not in the office, Dr. Hsu enjoys spending quality time with his wife, daughter, and two sons. He enjoys cruises, trying new foods, finding hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and he is an avid Costco fan.
